Luigi Belli (Italian, 1848-1919)

Son of Giuseppe, a painter, he was born in Turin on 28 February. 1848. Of French mother, he studied in Paris with Torrier decorative architecture; back in Turin, he began to devote himself exclusively to sculpture, studying at the Academy of Fine Arts with Odoardo Tabacchi. In 1871 he exhibited a Carlotta Cordayat the Promotrice of Turin and in the same year he was chosen by Count Marcello Panissera, president of the Albertina Academy, to model the memorial monument of the Fréjus tunnel, designed by the count himself for piazza dello Statuto in Turin, where it was inaugurated in 1879. From 1885 he began his teaching activity at the Accademia Albertina: first as an assistant, then (1888) as a professor of ornamental plastic; from 1912 he was professor of decoration and ornate. Retired due to age limits (1915), for a year he still taught modeling of the figure as a substitute teacher.

Numerous are his works scattered throughout Italy, as are numerous monuments that were awarded to him by competition: the War Memorial of Mentana in Milan, whose inauguration (Nov. 3, 1881) was also attended by Garibaldi; the Monument to Raphael , inaugurated in Urbino on 22 Aug. 1897, work for which the city awarded him honorary citizenship (bronze sketch, signed, in the National Modern Art Gallery of Rome); the Monument to Umberto I in Alessandria, inaugurated on 13 Aug. 1906, and the Monument to Mazzini, which, inaugurated in Turin on 15 July 1917, was his last work. B. was therefore one of the most active artists in the monumental and patriotic sculpture of post-Risorgimento Italy: alongside these monuments and others, including those, in Turin, dedicated to Rattazzi, to Sella, to the Crimean expedition (1892 ), the pediment of the Mauriziano hospital in Turin, the she- wolf of the Palazzo di Giustizia in Rome, the statue of Sardiniafor the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome, the colossal bust of the engineer Bona in the exit hall of the Turin Porta Nuova station (signed and dated 1884) and the numerous funeral monuments, such as those for junk families, Dojen and Leclair in the Turin cemetery, the one for Donna Eleonora Ruffini in Taggia Ligure and the one for the Zucchi family in Cortemaggiore.

The B. obtained an honorable mention in the competition for the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II in Turin, the second prize for the same monument in Milan, other prizes for those to Quintino Sella in Biella, to Anita Garibaldi in Ravenna, to Garibaldi in Turin and in Nice (the sketch of the latter, 1887, is kept in the local museum).

He died in Turin on May 24, 1919.

The best production of B. is distinguished from the realism of the monumental statuary contemporary to him for a purist imprint which, if in the Monument to Raphael leads him to look at some sculptors of the Renaissance, perhaps at F. Laurana, towards the end of his life ( Monument to Mazzini ) pushes him to exploit the qualities of white marble in order to achieve a greater essentiality of the plastic image.
